Bedroom sizing usually starts with square footage, then adjusts for sun exposure, insulation, ceiling height, and how the room is used.

Common bedroom BTU starting ranges

Most bedrooms fall between 100 and 350 square feet. As a very rough starting point under average conditions with standard ceiling height and moderate sun exposure:

  • Small bedroom (under 150 sq ft): often around 6,000 BTU
  • Average bedroom (150–250 sq ft): often 6,000 to 9,000 BTU
  • Larger or master bedroom (250–400 sq ft): often 9,000 to 12,000 BTU

Bedroom factors to review

  • Whether the room gets strong afternoon or west-facing sun
  • How well the walls, windows, and attic are insulated
  • Whether the door is usually kept closed
  • Ceiling height and any connected spaces

Why bedrooms need caution

Bedrooms are often occupied for long periods, especially overnight. Comfort expectations tend to be high because temperature and humidity can affect sleep quality. A simple estimate can help with planning, but final sizing should account for the actual room conditions.

Bedroom sizing notes

  • A bedroom with a large west-facing window will typically need more capacity than one with north-facing or shaded windows of the same floor area.
  • Bedrooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings need an upward adjustment for the extra air volume above the standard 8-foot reference.
  • If the bedroom shares an open doorway with a connected hallway or space, the estimate may understate the true load.
