Use this chart as a rough starting point when comparing room square footage with common mini split BTU ranges.
Mini split sizing usually starts with room size, then adjusts based on ceiling height, insulation, windows, sun exposure, climate, and room use. The table below shows commonBTU ranges grouped by approximate square footage.

How to read this chart
The ranges in this chart are intentionally broad. A shaded, well-insulated bedroom may need less capacity than a sunny garage with poor insulation, even if the square footage is similar. When the chart is less reliable

This chart is useful for quick reference when you only know the room's approximate square footage. Consider switching to the calculator when any of the following apply:
- Ceiling height is above 8 feet
- Insulation quality is below average or unknown
- The room gets heavy sun exposure, especially from south- or west-facing windows
- More than two people regularly occupy the space
- The room is a kitchen or includes cooking equipment
- The room has an unusual shape, multiple exposures, or connects to an open floor plan
