What Is AC Tonnage?
AC tonnage is another way to talk about cooling capacity. One ton is commonly treated as 12,000 BTU per hour.
Simple definition
Tonnage does not mean the unit weighs that many tons. It is capacity language used in air conditioning.
BTU and tons
A 1-ton cooling capacity is commonly described as 12,000 BTU. A 1.5-ton capacity is commonly described as 18,000 BTU.
Why mini split buyers see both terms
Mini splits are often listed by BTU, while contractors and older HVAC references may use tons. A converter helps translate between the two.
